With Love

Macgibbon & Kee Ltd., 1972. 119 pages. Illustrated in colours and b/w. Bound.

With Love. The Erotic Postcard. Erotic postcards from back in the days are a curiosity, a part of the social history of popular art in modern times. The postcard was a commonplace object before the advent of the telephone, and postcard manufacturers vied in attracting attention with sentimental, dramatic, symbol-laden, bizarre and surrealistic motifs (long before anyone called it surrealism). Along with wood-engravings in the weeklies, the children’s scrapbooks, the oleographs in the home etc., the postcard formed part of the visual media of the people, but they also genuinely expressed human aspirations. They were also often simply very funny and have not become less so with the years. A nice copy.
